Examiner insight
Most students arrive knowing the economics. What costs them the grade is how the answer is written. After marking real scripts since 2008, the same three problems come up again and again.
Answering the question actually asked. Command words matter. A brilliant answer to a slightly different question scores very little.
Analysis that connects. Chains of reasoning built step by step, rather than a conclusion asserted and hoped for.
Evaluation done to a structure. The highest value marks, and the ones most often left on the table under time pressure.
How lessons work
Nothing here is a package. It is how a first term goes for a student who is losing marks they should be getting.

Step one
The first lesson is diagnostic. I look at recent work and past paper answers and work out whether the gap is knowledge, application, analysis, evaluation or exam technique. Very often it is not the one the student expects.

Step two
Every hour is planned around that student. Explanation and discussion where the subject knowledge is thin, exam style questions and detailed feedback where the technique is the problem. Nothing is taught just because it is next in the book.

Step three
Work comes back marked against the real assessment criteria, so improvement is measurable rather than a feeling. Grade improvements of around two grades are common, though how far a student goes always depends on the work they put in.
Four courses
Same approach, different demands. Lessons are always matched to the specification in front of the student.
A Level
Micro, macro and the synoptic paper, with the essay technique that decides the grade. I examine AQA Paper 3 and all three Edexcel papers, so the feedback comes from the marking side of the desk.
GCSE & IGCSE
The right time to build habits rather than cram them. Reading a question properly, drawing diagrams that earn marks, and writing answers a marker can credit.
A Level
Pure, statistics and mechanics, one to one. Lessons follow the specification you are actually sitting and the past papers that go with it, with written work marked properly between sessions.
GCSE
Foundation or Higher, built around where the marks are actually going. Method marks, showing working, and reading a question properly before starting to answer it.

Both. Most lessons are online, one to one, over Zoom, which means students anywhere in the UK can work with me and nobody loses half an hour either side of a lesson travelling. I also teach face to face at my home in Croydon, which suits families in Croydon, Bromley, West Wickham, Orpington and the surrounding areas.
AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and Cambridge International, at both GCSE and A Level. I have examined Economics for these boards, so lessons are matched to the specification the student is actually sitting rather than the subject in general.
Fifteen in total, across Economics and Maths together — not fifteen of each. It is a deliberate limit. Marking written work properly takes time, and that time has to exist outside the lesson as well as in it.
It varies. Most students see marks move within a term once exam technique is addressed, because that is usually the quickest gap to close. Improvements of around two grades are common over a longer engagement, though how far a student goes depends on the work they put in between lessons.
